Located 30 minutes from Lamu town by boat, on the South Eastern corner of Manda Island, lies the beautiful and well preserved ruins of Takwa. Between the 15th and 16th century, this was home to a Swahili trading town, strategically positioned at the narrowest location on the whole island. The location was on shallow waters, a vantage point when many sails came to view. However, in the 17th century, salination of the once fresh water and endless encounters between the people of Takwa and Pate would see the town abandoned.
