This atoll alongside North Ari Atoll, are the results of the split of Ari Atoll (one of the largest atolls in Maldives at the time hosting 105 islands) into two, for easier administration, back in 1984. Also known as Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, South Ari Atoll comprises both inhabited and uninhabited islands (resort islands, airport islands and industrial islands).
Whale sharks and manta rays are frequently spotted in this atoll year round making it a great snorkeling destination.
