Located near Nairobi National Park, the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage was founded by Daphne Sheldrick, the widow of David Sheldrick, who was one of Kenya’s best known game wardens. The orphanage was started consequent to the 1970s poaching wars at Tsavo National Park.
To date, the orphanage continues to rehabilitate, support and care for elephants orphaned by poaching from all over the country. They receive care to a tune of 24-hours a day from highly dedicated staff who become surrogate mothers to the calves. Eventually, the calves are reintroduced to the wild at the Tsavo National Park.
The Centre is open to the public each morning between 11 a.m. to Noon, which is the period the calves are being exercised and bathed and visitors are free to watch.
